Like
every year, San Sebastian enjoyed with his international film
festival, during 10 days more than 200 films
divided in 6 different sections, producers, directors, actors,
stars… are mixed with the locals.
This edition
started with a bad news, the director Robert Wise died in his
home in
Los Angeles at the age of 91. One of the sections
this year was dedicated to his figure and the people had the opportunity
to see all his films, including the famous musicals “West
Side Story” and “The sound of music”. He visited
the film festival in 1994 like the president of the jury and this
time because his age he decided to stay in his home. His wife,
Millicent Wise arrived to San Sebastian the 14th of September to
participate in the opening ceremony. After some hours in the city
she received the bad news and she returned immediately to the United
States.
The other section
dedicated to a director was Abel Ferrara. He participated in
the opening
ceremony and gave thanks to the organization
of the festival for this opportunity and honor. This year’s
thematic retrospective is called “Rebellious and Untamed” and
included a series of films that show the liberation of women from
various viewpoints some of the films are: “Thelma &Louise”, “Fried
Green Tomatoes”, “La vieille dame indigne”, “Boys
Don’t Cry”…

The Donostia
Award is given to a star to thank their contribution to the film
industry,
a lot of stars already receive it (Gregory
Peck, Glenn Ford, Bette Davis, Susan Sarandon, Robert De Niro,
Jeremy Irons, Michael Douglas, Al Pacino…) The president
of this edition’s international jury Angelica Houston had
her own Donostia Award also in 1999. Willem Dafoe and Ben Gazzara
are the two stars including in that special list. Two fantastic
actors working between Hollywood and the independent film industry
with a spectacular success.
The Hollywood
movies were outside in the two main sections (Official & Open
Zone), the European films were the real stars. The Spanish “Obaba” opened
the Official Section with a big quality and it is quite sure that
it will be the Spanish candidate for the Oscars. Anthony Hopkins’ last
film “The world’s Fastest Indian” was presented
also. France was also in the Official Competition with “Entre
ses mains” and “Jen e suis pas là pour être
aimé” with very good critics. The last film of the
director Michael Wintterbotton “ A cock and Bull Story” also
liked a lot to the critics. Apart from those mentioned ones there
were presented also films from Germany, China, Brasil, Denmark…

William Dafoe
The section
Open Zone was divided into two different groups: The Festivals’ Top were you could found the films coming from
the other international film festivals and The New Director’s
section giving them the opportunity to show their films and to
be known and also and award of 90.000 € .
From Cannes 2005 came “Match Point” the last film of
Woody Allen (Donostia Award 2004) and also “Me and you and
everyone we know” (Winer of the “Critics’ Week” in
Cannes).
In the New
Director’s section were presented two French
movies: “Alex” (Jose Alcala) and “Sauf le respect
que je vous dois” (Fabienne Godet). With a film in this section “Shadowboxer” (Lee
Daniels) the afroamerican actor Cuba Good Wing Jr. visited San
Sebastian.

The Horizontes
Selection features the best cinema from Latin America and between
all of
them the winer received the Horizontes Award
( 18.000 €). Last years all the best Spanish productions were
also presented in “Made in Spain 05”.
Now we need to wait until September 2006 to enjoy again with this
fantastic and important International Film Festival.
